7 Weeks Out From Toronto Pro

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to first apologizes for not posting more blogs on my journey to my big return to the stage. Things are heating up here and I am at the stage of the prep where the diet starts to hit you. Sometimes I think that the diet is easy but it is the lack of sleep that effects you in the latter stages of the prep. Lots of visits to the bathroom does interrupt your sleep.
My training is going well and I feel really strong but I found that training at 70% intensity really allows my body to hold on to more muscle. Back in the day I would train at a crazy intensity and I found I was over training and felt that I was losing muscle.
I have not deviated from my training in regards to training the same way from off season to pre contest. I see this in a lot of athletes. They train in higher rep range and drop the weight due to getting ready to compete. I think Phil Heath says it very well that he would not change the way he trains from off season to pre contest. For me this makes sense as you want to hold on to all that muscle you have gained in the off season going into your show.
I have been getting a lot of messages asking to me if I am still doing the 212lbs class and my answer is yes and no. I am still not sure and Harold (my coach) and I think that at this point of my prep I should not be thinking about the 212lbs class. If I make it great and if I don't well I will just do the open. Still it would be nice to see what I would look like at 212lbs. Harold my trainer did make a good point that I did turn pro at 221lbs and I was in good shape that year. Right now my weight is 229lbs this morning Seven weeks out.
I am also pleased that I do not have to do any more traveling till the show. March was a crazy month of traveling for me having to fly to Vegas, then a trip to Toronto. But I was pleased that I stuck to the diet 100% while traveling. So if you are traveling, pre prepare your food and take it with you. Or if you are traveling by plane, as soon as you land find the nearest food store and get your clean foods.
Well that's it from my end. Thanks for reading everyone and put in the work! More updates to come.
With gratitude,
Troy :)

Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward

I just found this wonder story. I really think we can all benefit from it.

Let me know your thoughts.......

This story is true and it happened to me..

One day after work, I asked my husband to pull into a local store so I could buy some cards and some gifts for our nieces.I got into line to check out behind a man dressed in a suit. I didn't pay much attention but then the woman in front of him started asking directions and he politely gave her all the directions. What caught my attention is that twice he said either God bless you or you have a blessed day.As a Christian, I thought - how refreshing to hear. It was now his turn to check out and he just had a gift bag and a card and tissue and some other small things, buying to wrap someone a gift. But, it seemed he didn't have much cash on him. So he told the cashier to check him out and he'd pay cash for part and part on a credit card. When she checked him out he was a little less than a dollar short and started to scan his credit card. "Stop" I said, "Don't scan your credit card for that dollar" and so I handed the cashier a dollar. He looked over at me and I said "no, it's nothing - I'm just trying to get out of debt and I hate to see anyone using a card for anything." He thanked me and "blessed" me too.

The cashier was surprised. I'm not sure if she was surprised because I did that or because she didn't expect me to help him or if it was because he was in a very nice suit and I was there in jeans and a t-shirt - I'm not sure, but when she gave the little change back from my dollar, she held my hand and told me that that was so unexpected of me and told me that I would be truly blessed for the act I just did. I just smiled and said "well I hope so -I could use some blessings!" So just then she told me my total which was around $6.00. As I reached in my wallet to pay her, a young man behind me said - "Wait! How much was her total?" The cashier told him and he reached in his wallet to pay for mine! I said, "No, you don't need to do that - - mine is much more than what I just dished out to help him." He said no he wanted to pay for mine for what he had just witnessed.

And here all along, I was feeling good by helping someone, but then when he did that, well; it was so unexpected and took me so by surprise. With tears in my eyes, I gave him a hug.I always try to do little things that I can, but have never had anyone do anything like that for me.I was speechless. As I walked to my car just amazed at God's love that had just been shown, I wondered what the cashier must be thinking of what she just witnessed in front of her.I cried when I told my husband because I just felt right there, right then, in a world where there is so much going bad, I witnessed God's love.

I went home that night and blogged about it and challenged anyone reading it to do the same.To do something small for someone else and see the difference it makes in your life as well as theirs.Of course my blog only has a couple of followers, but I had to get this story out! That young gentleman does not know how much he touched my heart by following my example. I'll never forget it.So, why not do something? Pay a toll for the car behind you, offer to pay for someone's item they are checking out, hand a water to someone working on the road, pay for someone's lunch - - it doesn't take much to show the love of God.

6 Weeks Out (Be Inspired Every Day)

Hi everyone,

Well it is 5am and I cant sleep so what better way of starting my day with writing a Blog post.

12 weeks of dieting have already past and I must say that twelve weeks have flown on by.

I can honestly say now that the diet has hit me like a thunder blot and energy is starting to get low but having enthusiasm to write blogs really makes me feel good. If you have lots balance in your life while getting ready for a show it can be such a blessing.

If I can give anybody one tip while getting ready for a bodybuilding show is to keep busy and focus on other things or projects as this can keep your mind off the contest prep. I have found that by being busy in my other business I have found the whole process so much easier than in past contest preps.

Here is an example....I have been so busy putting together peoples training and nutrition plans that I have taken the focus of myself and focused on helping others. In my other business it is all about how Meghan and I can help the newest person become more successful. Now don't get me wrong it can sometimes get in the way of my workouts but I always schedule my training in my day timer first then I plan around my training all the other events and projects I need to get done.

One more amazing tip I can give everyone regardless if you are getting ready for a show is to plan your day the night before. Form a list of all the things you need to get done and make sure you complete the most important tasks first. I find this whole process so amazing and I recommend it to anyone. Getting things into better order is the great secret of life as Bob Proctor would say.

Try this too......If you feel low on the diet and need to be inspired just go to Youtube and watch some bodybuilding motivation video's. I like to watch Youtube video's of 50 Cent, Jay z, Sir Richard Branson, Will Smith etc to see what these guys do on daily basis and how they made it to the big time and what kind of life style they have, for me, I find this so inspiring.

Keep yourself in a good vibration everyday, especially while getting ready for a bodybuilding show. It can turn your whole day around.

Thanks for reading.

Have a super week and Think Big!

Comfort Zone (8 Weeks Out)

Hi everyone,

I am eight weeks out from the Toronto Pro and enjoying my prep so far.

I have been keeping my mind busy with lots of reading which is really helping me stay calm while getting ready for this show. I was given this amazing quote by my good friends Gail and Terry last week and I have put it up on my wall at home. I would like to share it with everyone as I think it has some jewels of wisdom in it..............

I used to have a comfort zone... where I knew I could not fail...The same four walls and busy work.... were really more like jail...I longed so much to do the things...I'd never done before... But, I stayed inside my comfort Zone... and paced the same old floor.

I said it didn't matter...that I wasn't doing much...I said I didn't care for things...like diamonds... cars.... and such.
I claimed to be so busy... with the things inside my zone but, deep inside... I longed...for some victory of my own.

I couldn't let my life go by... just watching others win.
I held my breath... and stepped outside... to let the change begin...
I took a step.... and with a strength, I'd never felt before....
I kissed my comfort Zone good bye.... and closed and locked the door.

If you are in a comfort Zone... afraid to venture out.....
Remember that all winners, at one time were filled with doubt.
A step or two, and words of praise, can make your dreams come true....
so, greet your future with a smile... Success is there for you.

Thanks for taking the time to read this everyone and have a fantastic Easter weekend.

Competing With Balance (9 weeks Out)

Hi Everyone,

Everything is going nice and smoothly with my prep for the Toronto Pro in June but I don't really want to ramble on about me in this blog.

I received an amazing email from a good friend Matt Park the other day on the importance of competing with Balance and I thought it would be a good thing to share it with you all. I hope Matt does not mind..........

Do you stuggle in maintaining balance in your life with family, friends and a social life in getting ready for a show? This can be very difficult to deal with but here are a few tips that help.

1. Surround yourself with powerful, positive friends that make you laugh and are great support.

2. If you are married or are in a relationship, talk to your partner, work as a team, let them know how you feel on good or bad days. Don't hold in emotions.

3. Prepare your meals in advance. When you are prepared you have less stress and can enjoy your days much more.

4. Be proud of yourself each day. Even if you have a tough day find something positive and focus on that perspective.

5. Live with gratitude.

I think number five is very important as we tend to forget all the good things in our lives like are family, friends, our home etc.

If I am having a tough time on the diet while getting ready to compete I will sit down and get a pen and pad and write out 10 things that I am grateful for. It soon changes my state of having a pity party to feeling grateful and joyful.

Do not feel sorry for yourself, have balance in your life!!

Stay strong!

Troy :)

11 Weeks Out To Toronto Pro

Hi everyone,

It is 5am and I can't sleep. The joys of dieting lol. I am 11 weeks out and I am still around 240lbs but getting leaner. Energy levels are really good but I sometimes hit a low especially when I am training clients at 6:30am.

The last three weeks I have not been doing any cardio but this week we have put the cardio back in. So I have been back on the Gauntlet right after weight training.

At twelve weeks out my Glutes were coming though which is a good sign and I am very happy about that. In past shows they come in the last three weeks.

I am still visualizing every day and now increased my meditation to twice per day. I find meditation just so amazing and I feel a big difference, I feel more calm and relaxed and I am not as snappy lol. Here is the link to the guided meditation I use. Check it out http://justexhale.ca/

I thought I would post my diet and show you guys what I am doing and you might even get some tips from it.

13 Weeks Out From Toronto Pro!!

Hi gang,

Well I have been dieting since 18 weeks out and it is going rather smoothly. Once 18 weeks out hit I got on the game plan of cardio and clean eating. I started my diet at 257lbs and now I am sitting around 240lbs. My weight dropped so fast so my trainer decided to pull my cardio and I am not going lie, it is fun not having to do any cardio lol.

I thought it would be a good idea to post my current diet on here so you guys can see what I am doing and to help you guys get some ideas on how to get in shape especially with the summer coming. We all want ripped abs for summer.

Some other things I have been doing which could be of benefit to everyone reading this is that I read something positive and uplifting every day for one hour while in my contest prep mode. I would also recommend meditation for people as it can really keep you calm and in a relaxed vibration.

Some good news happened this month. I re signed with Allmax Nutrition and I am ever so pleased to be a part of such a great company with an amazing product line. Check out there web site http://www.allmaxnutrition.com/

I will keep you all posted on how things go with my contest prep and my goal is to help inspire you all and keep you all on the path to your health and fitness goals.

Train hard everyone.

We All Need A Coach

No matter what gym I go to if it is in the UK, USA or Canada, I constantly see people walking around on the gym floor with no sense of direction, no plan and just going though the motions.

What is sad to see is people not showing any evidence of changes to their body. They continue to look the same year after year. If this is you then you need to look at all areas of your lifestyle. Are you getting enough sleep every night, do you have a good nutrition plan to follow and do you have a plan attack when it comes to your training? Really sit down and ask yourself these three questions.

What springs to mind is that all great sports men and sports women have coaches. I know for sure that Tiger Woods and Michael Jordon have coaches. You may say that why does Tiger Woods need a coach as he is the best in the world at what he does? My answer is that he is always working on becoming better, creating a better version of himself. No matter what level you are we all need a coach.

My advice to anyone reading this who does not have coach is to go and find a good coach that walks their talk and above all.... YOU have to be coach-able...you will be amazed with the results you will get. Having a coach makes you accountable. This shows that you are hugely committed and commitment means going towards your goal no matter what even after the mood you set it in has faded.

Analogy of a hand-pumped water well

Hi everyone,

I would like to share this information with you all which I find hugely valuable.

This written by Darren Hardy the pubilsher of Success Magazine and motivational speaker.

Lack of consistency is the subtle stealer of dreams. The stop and start process kills progress in any pursuit. In fact, inconsistency is one of the biggest reasons people don’t achieve their goals, and instead end up living a life of frustration and disappointment.

When you start thinking about slacking off on your action plan, routines and rhythms, consider the massive cost of inconsistency. It is not the loss of the single action and the tiny results it creates; it is the utter collapse and loss of momentum your entire progress will suffer.

Zig Ziglar uses the analogy of a hand-pumped water well. The water table is 25 feet below the ground. A pipe runs down to the water table, and you have to pump the lever to create the suction that brings the water above the ground and out of the spout.

When most people start a new endeavor, they grab the lever and start pumping really hard, they are excited, committed and resolute…. They pump and pump and pump, and after a few minutes (or a few weeks), when they don’t see any water (results), they give up pumping the lever altogether.

The first few people they showed the product to didn’t buy. After two weeks on their new health plan, they haven’t lost one pound. They didn’t meet anyone at the first two networking events they attended.

People expect instant results, and when they don’t see progress, they quit… before success has a chance to show itself. Wise people continue to pump.

If they persevere and continue to pump and pump the lever, eventually a few drops of water will appear. At this point, a lot of people say, “You’ve got to be kidding! All this pumping, and for what? A few drops of water? Forget it!”

Eight weeks of working out at the gym, and they don’t look like a Victoria’s Secret or Calvin Klein underwear model. They didn’t make $10,000 their first 90 days in their new business. Again, they don’t see the results they were expecting. They think their plan isn’t working, and they quit. But the wise person persists.

If you continue to pump, eventually, you will get a full and steady stream of water. Congratulations, success!

But here’s the real secret…

Once the water is flowing, you no longer need to pump the lever as hard or as quickly. It’s easy to keep the pressure steady by just pumping the lever CONSISTENTLY.

Now, what happens if you let go of the lever for too long? The water falls back down into the ground, and you’re back to square one. If you come back and pump the lever easily and steadily, you still won’t get any water. You have lost the vacuum, or the momentum of your compounded effort. The only way to get the water flowing again is to pump the lever really hard all over again.

The problem with most people’s lives is that they work really hard to get the water flowing and then take a break. Wham-o! They have to pump like crazy again just to get back to even. Living life in a constant state of fits and starts is frustrating and demoralizing.

People start up a routine of making 10 new prospecting calls a day, strike a little gold, and then don’t dial for a couple of weeks. People get excited about their new “date night” routine with their spouse, but in a few weeks, it’s back to Netflix and microwave popcorn on the couch Friday nights. I see people buy a new book, sign up for a new program or seminar and go like crazy for a couple of weeks or months. Then they stop and end up right back where they started—sound familiar?

Consistency is one of the most important principles of success.

Here are a few ways lack of consistency can negatively impact your life… If you miss a couple weeks of workouts, or affectionate gestures to your wife, or slack off on your prospecting routine, you don’t just lose the results those two weeks could have produced. If that is all you lost, not much damage would be done. What people don’t realize is that by breaking their rhythm, they kill Mo (Momentum)—and that is the real tragedy. The cost to revive momentum is an enormous amount of time, energy and effort—not to advance, but to get back to where you started.

Committing to the principle of applying consistent effort to your goals will forever alter how you (could) live your life. One moment of inconsistency, a single poor choice, temporary inaction, a brief lapse of discipline doesn’t simply result in the loss of that one action—it breaks your momentum. Your Mo has left the building.

It’s not how you or your competition start; it’s how you continue. If you stay consistent, even slowly (the tortoise), ultimately, you will beat the most talented of competitors (the hare). CONSISTENCY is why the tortoise beats the hare every time.

At the start of this program, I gave you this all-important axiom, your key to the obtainment of any goal, dream or desire you can envision: Commitment is doing the thing you said you were going to do, long after the mood you said it in has left you.

Go for it!!

Troy :)

Believe (The Magic word)

Hi everyone,

I hope these words lift and inspire each and everyone of you like it has me.....

Believe in your dreams.

Believe in today.

Believe that you are loved.

Don't Change

Hi everyone,

Right now, there are a lot of athletes getting into diet mode for their bodybuilding contests. I start my contest prep soon too and I wanted to touch on a very important thing that is so crucial to your success as a competitor.

This is....

Do not change who you are when you are getting ready for your contest! What do I mean by this? Well, I have had the luxury of taking the 2009 season off to make improvements to my physique and I witnessed a lot of common mistakes with people when they are in pre-contest mode. I noticed that sometimes there is a major shift in a person's personality during their contest prep. It would seem as though sometimes we feel sorry for ourselves, or angry or sad because we have to diet. It really does not have to be this way.

I will confess that I have been one to display this sort of behavior in the past. I would walk around feeling sorry for myself and be very moody. I would shut out the people around me. I would avoid family or social functions or not help friends out all because I was getting ready for a contest. Basically, I was putting my life on hold and not being the best person I can be just for a bodybuilding contest.

We make a choice to do this sport and we also have a choice of how we feel and behave. So, why not choose to feel good? Why not choose to be the best ambassador to the sport of bodybuilding that you can be? It is up to us to be good role models for our sport. You are supposed to enjoy the journey and if you are not then you need to ask yourself why you are doing this.

There are ways to make yourself feel better when preparing for a show....(note: these tips can be used even when you are not in contest mode)

- Stay calm in any situation. Take a deep breath and relax!
- Meditate (this is very important).
- Have fun and laugh a lot.
- Read motivational books.
- Find a personal development program - (like Six Minutes To Success)
- Spend quality time with the people who are close to you in your life.
- Leave an impression of increase with everyone you meet.

Until next time!

Be the best you can be.

Are You Doing Everything You Can In Order To In Sure Success

Hi everyone,

One thing that strikes me pretty much on a daily basis is, am I doing everything I possibly can in order to be the best bodybuilder I can be. This subject goes though my mind many times throughout the day.

The points I address to myself are:
. Am I going to the gym and making every workout count? I mean really count?
. Am I getting the food I need to be the a champion?
. Am I making the changes to my physique? Am I seeing changes?
. Am I looking after my body (my investment)?
. Is my desire and hunger for the sport still strong as ever?
. Do I give my body the rest it needs in order to grow?
. Am I giving back to the sport of bodybuilding? Do I help others?

All of theses thing come into my mind very frequently.

My main goal is always trying to be better and to keep growing as a person and keep making the improvements I need to be the best bodybuilder I can be.

When I go to the gym I have to really make that workout count. I see time and time again so many people not being focused in the gym. They spend way to much time talking instead they should be training and being more productive.

Looking back over the years over years I have always said to myself "Am I doing enough to be the athlete I want to be"?

When most bodybuilders go on stage and don't do as well as they should, they have to say to themselves did they do everything in there power the whole year round. Did they train hard enough, did they eat clean all year round, did they stay out of the bars and clubs, did they sacrifice enough?

When I had not such a good year competing I would blame the judges and say to myself that they got it wrong. Instead what I should have done is take a hard look at myself and ask myself if I did everything in my power to place better in that show? Did I do everything I could in order to be where I want to be?

Ponder this for a moment and say to yourself....Am I doing everything I possibly can right now to be where I want to be?

To the next level!!!

Do Not Be Afraid To Take Time Off

Hi again everyone,

I just wanted to talk about the importance of taking time off from the gym and the rewards you can get from doing this.

Being around a lot of bodybuilders they always seem to be training day after day, week after week, and month after month. I will talk about the importance of training less frequetly but I can save that topic for another blog. These people never really take time off to let there minds and body heal.

If someone is training with the right intensity then they would need to take off from training every eight to ten weeks. Your muscles will grow when recuperating out of the gym. When you return back to the gym you will notice instantly that you will have so much more intensity but above all you will have more mental energy.

As you enter the second week back after taking time off you will notice your training will go to a whole new level. You will notice insane pumps in your muscles but don't just take my word for it, try it for yourself. If you've trained hard, I mean really hard then you deserve the break. You have earned it.

Until next time.............

Follow your bliss!!

The Power Of Visualization

Hi Everyone,

It has taken me over two weeks to think of a topic to write about. This one came out of no where and hit me like a thunder bolt and there is nothing more important for an athlete than the power of Visualization.

Who watched the 2009 Mr. Olympia Finals? I was on the edge of my seat the whole way though the show. I wanted to touch on what Jay Cutler said after he won his third Mr. Olympia title. He said something along the lines of...for a whole year, I prayed and visualized me standing here being announced the Mr Olympia....

This really gets you thinking on how powerful your thoughts can be. Doesn't it?

Believe it or not this worked for me also when I turned Pro in 2006. I visualized in the morning when I woke up and before I went to bed on being British Champion. I visualized my name being announced by the head judge as the new Heavyweight and Overall British Champion. Each time I visualized this outcome it became clearer and I could feel the emotions. So does this stuff really work?.....you bet it works! Look at all top sports men and women, they all do this before any event they participate in. For example, most track and field athletes play the race over in there mind even before they step on the track. This is true of other sports too.

On a personal note I am pleased to announce that I am working with my long time friend Harold Charles Marillier again. Harold knows my body inside and out and I turned pro working with him so I am very happy with this decision. I am looking at doing four shows next year and after a year off making improvements I am excited about stepping on stage in 2010...so stayed tuned for that news.

Things That Hold You Back....Part 1

Hi everyone,

It has been a few weeks since I last posted a blog and to be honest I have been struggling in my mind about what to blog about. Finally, I was able to formulate into words something that I have given a lot of thought to lately and in the past.

I am sure everyone is familiar with two very strong and very negative emotions; Jealousy and Envy...

I will hold my hand up and say that I have gone though the sport of bodybuilding having many moments of jealousy and envy towards others.

Some of the things I would say and feel as an example are: "I am better than that person so I deserve it more than him..." or "Why does so and so get all the good luck, exposure and benefits...he is not even that good....." I think you know what I am getting at.

I have learned a lot about myself and how jealousy and envy affects me. The things I have learned are:
  • Jealousy is being afraid of losing something that you do not have. That tells me that it is a rather pointless emotion.
  • When you get like this you just keep pushing away the things you want in life.
  • It is important to be truly grateful (key word) for the things you have achieved in life whatever it may be. It is the gratitude that brings more good things.
  • It is important to be as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
  • That I should be focusing so much of my attention on improving myself that I have no time to be jealous or envious of others.
  • Jealously can be eliminated through right thinking and looking at the cause of it.

  • So, if you are going though the same thing as I did then I can say without doubt that your life will improve once your eliminate these negative feelings. If you see someone doing well be happy for them and know that you have the ability to achieve your goals too. Stay focused on your goals and on improving yourself because those are the only things you can control.

Have a great week! Thanks for reading! Time for my next meal!
    Troy :-)
